The only thing I found excessively vague is the constant detailing of every item of clothing worn by the characters -although it stays within the mentality of the main character and its constant envy and struggle to be better than others in all aspects-- I find it annoying sometimes to list every brand, feature, price, material, etc. This book takes you throughout so many emotions (disgust, hate, greed, ambition, anger) and it does so in a superbly evil way. But in the end Ellis creates a masterpiece that you will read more than once. etc. Deep in the book you start sympathizing with the main character and share his views in materialistic possessions, but not in cannibalism and the pure desire to hurt others -though it makes you see the weakness of people and how easy it is to manipulate emotions and influence outcomes. The book brings you closer to the understanding of what a human predator is, and how close we still remain from animals in the wild in our characteristic violent behavior towards others.
What a narrative. What an author. Interesting, compelling. This is a great addition to seeing the movie. I learned more about the film with this one.
This book is absolutely brilliant, but it could be very damaging to the psyche of most readers. Even a jaded horror fan like me, (who found the film version a playful, funny little jaunt), found this book to be so incredibly disturbing that at certain points in the book I had to stop reading it for a week or so. Beware. American Psycho is not only an important piece of literature, it is also debatably a modern masterpiece of fiction & social satire. Despite all of this, I would NOT recommend it to many readers.
I mean, there IS some violence but its not too graphic or anything. they totally break the 4th wall in this book on numerous occasions. I love the movie as well.
:) I aslo love how its from his point of view. haha.so overall, GREAT BOOK. and OMG.
I loved this book so much.I dont want to make this a long detailed review (im doing HW right now lol) but let me just say that this book was great. If anything i thought this book was hilarious, i laughed out loud so many times. :D
It wasn't very violent or gory like some people were saying. I wasn't disturbed by what went on in the book.
Oh yeah, and the yuppie protagonist of the novel just happens to be a serial killer that tortures his victims in ways that are almost too horrible for words.Ellis establishes a bizarre rhythm in American Psycho where the protagonist alternates from describing high fashion, expensive trendy restaurants, to exactly how he rapes, tortures and murders a young model, and then as if nothing had happened launches into a discussion of popular music. In short, American Psycho details the horror of living in a materialistic image obsessed culture where the individual ego is repressed and basic emotional needs denied.
